WAR! Hunh! Good God, y'all! What is it good for? Well, in real life it's not good for much, but in the world of video games, it's can sometimes make for a killer of a time - which is exactly the case with Electronic Arts' new exercise in air-to-surface mega-mayhem, Urban Strike.

If you're at all familiar with the series, you'll know that the Strike games are EA's attempt at creating a Chuck Norris-type of franchise, only this time instead of the silver screen, it's the TV screen. The third entry into the series is just as cool as the first two, and - like a good sequel should - it improves upon the past.

In Urban Strike, you play the commander once again, and this time...it's personal. Your good friend Agent Ego has been killed while investigating terrorist/presidential candidate R.H. Malone's funny business, and you're out to stop Malone's maniacal schemes and hand him a beatdown while you're at it. Before you start on the first mission (in the jungles of Hawaii) you pick a copilot out of a pool of many and then it's showtime.

You'll start your first mission in a Maverick helicopter, which is equipped with the latest weapons (all of which are guaranteed to turn a terrorist into a crispy snack) and a winch to snatch armor, fuel, and weapons refills. The point isn't just to fire as many missiles as you can, though. Every mission has a variety of requirements that you must fulfill before going on to the next one, and this feature makes Urban Strike one of those games which might make your head spin due to the planning and tricky flying you'll have to pull off. As you complete missions, the story line unfolds, you get a chance to try out different vehicles and you also change locations (hey, it's called Urban Strike, you didn't think you'd have to spend all day in the jungle, did you)?

Even if you're not a fan of B-grade war movies, you should give Urban Strike a go, 'cause you'll probably get into it in no time. If (like Crispin Glover) you're a big Chuck Norris fan, all of your friends will probably start to get annoyed by the sounds of your shameless gushing.

Graphics

You can't go wrong with an awesome 3/4 display in my book. This game looks great and it scrolls great. The explosions are pretty awesome -you'll probably start blowing up stuff just to see 'em.

Sound/Music

Very cheesy electronic rock score detracts from the audio mayhem of raining bullets and exploding helicopters. Slayer, Napalm Death or maybe the Ramones would be the appropriate music to put on in the background.

Playability

Addictive, to say the least. Being able to choose between 'momentum' or 'no momentum' for the chopper controls is cool (but momentum is the most fun). The controls feel like you're caressing something you shouldn't.

Lowdown

One of the best games to come down the pipe recently. Urban Strike really has the feel of those low budget B-movies which I tend to enjoy, so naturally I was hooked. Everything is here: cool graphics, challenge and solid playability. Rent a couple of old Cannon movies to get into the mood and then immerse yourself in the top notch entertainment of Urban Strike.

We've beaten Desert Strike and conquered Jungle Strike. Now Electronic Arts has announced the latest in this series.

It's called Urban Strike. As you can probably guess, you travel to heavily populated areas trying to accomplish missions similar in nature to those in the previous games.

Like Jungle Strike, you can use different vehicles, like the classic chopper and miniature plane, or even set out on foot. In Urban Strike you'll be going to some of the most well known spots in America like New York and even Las Vegas. For those of you who are trigger happy, you'll have a real blast in more ways than one.

Electronic Arts has improved on the old theme, making Urban Strike an action cart that you probably won't want to miss.

Urban Strike is a helicopter game.

Urban Strike is the third in EA's long running series of helicopter action games. An evil genius named H. R. Malone has started a cult and managed to gather millions of followers. Malone is using his influence and wealth to build a super weapon with which he will overthrow the government. You will once again suit up and take control of various types of helicopters to stop Malone's evil scheme.

Urban Strike is the first, and only, game in the Strike series to feature non-vehicular combat. In some levels you will leave your helicopter and proceed on foot.

You have to control helicopters and fun down enemies as well as gathering supplies and fulfilling other mission objectives. Each mission requires you to do something different and the password system allows you to carry on a game where you left off if you don't have time to complete it all in one go.

Urban Strike game features:

  • The Sequel to Jungle Strike features exciting helicopter combat and nine levels of play
  • Various pilots and gunners to utilize
  • A password save system
  • 3 levels are on foot

Vacation Out Of Bounds

So you're sitting on the beach in Hawaii, soaking up the rays (and a ft few tropical coolers), when you learn that the TV hate-monger Malone is up to his old tricks.

It's back into the skies behind the stick of a Mohican attack helicopter — and a more powerful Blackhawke, if you can find it — to conduct a series often multi-mission campaigns against Malone's strongholds, from the sunny Hawaiian Islands, up the West Coast, through the casinos, and finally for a phenomenal showdown somewhere at Malone's fortress in the East.

Two things make your job a little less daunting:

  1. Your pool of copilots.
  2. Your Watchcom.

Each copilot has a different skill rating for both gun control (accuracy and range) and winch control (speed and timing).

A good gunner who's a poor winch-er may make you work a little harder at picking up people or cargo.

A poor gunner may have shorter range and less accuracy. Rescuing MIA copilots increases both your talent pool and your chances of success.

The Watchcom is a handy unit that you see being uploaded at every mission briefing.

Access it with the Start button to toggle through the objectives of your current campaign; the locations of important items like ammo, fuel, and armor power-ups; and the status of your current helicopter.

Urban Strike gives you the tools you need to save America from the clutches of a truly twisted egomaniac.

All you need to supply is the skill, the courage, and the desire to be the leanest, meanest helicopter pilot alive.

Hot Hints

  1. Each copilot has different skill ratings in gunnery and winching. Decide which is more important to your mission before selecting a copilot They do make a difference.
  2. Get the Blackhawke helicopter whenever possible. It has twice as much armor and ammo as the Mohican.
  3. Keep tabs on your missions and locations with your Watchcom.

Overview

Load your guns.

Check your aerial cannon. Rev up your chopper.

Electronic Arts is about to put you back into the skies with Urban Strike, the next great chapter in the Strike helicopter-combat series.

Game

As the sun-loving leader of an elite UN strike force, you must stop a megalomaniac from taking over America from normal folks like you and us.

Malone's his name, and a dictatorial America is his game.

The guy's a major weasel, and you get to do him in. With selectable copilots, password save, and ten big campaigns, Urban Strike will satisfy the cravings of any freedom fighter who's wanted to kick the snot out of a dirty dictator.

№ 41 Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel

Genesis

Nuts to You

Zero's up against a diabolical lumberjack named Jaques LeSheets.

To save his forest home, the bucktoothed warrior must swoop, spin, and Flic-Flac his way through seven peril-ridden regions.

Flic-Flac?

It's a highspeed tucked jump with a devastating midair kick thrown in for good measure.

Zero's also got nunchakus for up-close enemies, razor-sharp stars that he can fling from a distance, and a Super Dive that can propel him up caverns, above toxic waste pools, and into the clouds.

You'll have to pull Zero's moves pretty fast to foil all the weird and wild enemies in his path—rock-solid Boulder Men, twerps with propellers on their heads, and more. Just to make things more difficult, snipers will target you from time to time.

Zero is an easy game to get into, but by the time you move into the Mountain Tunnels, you'll be begging for mercy.

So order a pizza, get comfortable, and prepare for some seriously challenging action.

Hot Hints

  1. Spin-attack the surveillance cameras twice.
  2. Too many leaps on a cliff pod, and it swallows you whole and spits out your bones.
  3. Bonus-round doors burst if you overinflate them.
  4. Flic-Flac enemies by pressing the D-Pad Left or Right, then pressing Button C.

Overview

You battled him in Aero the Acro-Bat.

Now he's on your side in a high-flying, high-kicking Genesis game of his own.

Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel from Sunsoft takes one player on an Action/Adventure crammed with wily enemies, hidden areas, and fighting moves galore.

In addition to his trademark Dive-Bomb, this daredevil rodent has a whole arsenal of wild martial-arts maneuvers that'll keep your fingers scrambling.

He's also got a scream that could curl the hair on your chest.

If you're a fan of Aero's acrobatics, attacks, and defiant attitude, you're gonna love Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel.

2001 is not a good year. Drug cartels control San Francisco and New York. A vile criminal returns from the grave. The Iraqis are on our side. About the only bright spot in this turn-of-the-century scenario is that it takes place in Urban Strike, a top-notch helicopter-combat game.

Strike Tree

The newest member of Electronic Arts's chopper squadron, Urban Strike takes the lead position. Like its predecessors, the game flies you into a hella-cious air war against well- armed, ferocious foes.

ProTip: Don't leave your heart in San Francisco, Mission 4. Find the 1-Up near a beach.

First Desert. Then Jungle. Now Urban. Any questions about this Strike's battleground? You fly and die through ten massive Missions (with six to nine Campaigns each) in famous cities such as San Francisco, New York, and Las Vegas.

The deadly fighting, both airborne and ground based, calls for advanced pilot training. Urban requires heady game play as well as prodigious thumb-pumping. You fly two helicopters and drive a ground-assault vehicle via a M-overhead view against enemy aircraft, tank's, and gun emplacements. Additionally, you exit the chopper for search-and-destroy infantry shooting action.

  • Red sparks signify that bullets and rockets are damaging a target.
  • In Mission 5, New York, shoot structures on top of sky-scrapers to find supplies.

Urban Controls

The controls in all fighting modes are generally right on, 'but the helicopter puts the joypad through the most rigorous workout. Excellent new chopper moves enable you to lay down awesome fire-power. Jinking slides the 'copter laterally, and rotating spins it 360 degrees. However, as with the previous games, flight control depends on the condition of your Genesis directional pad, and lining up precision shots can take forever.

Serious Sights

The whirlybird graphics have more ups than downs. Even though the overhead view appears flat at times, the aircraft always look cool as they smoothly wheel and deal destruction. Once again, tiny snipers dog your flight path, but the detail in their movements is great. The famous Strike sounds are still sweet. Helicopter sounds, gunfire, and explosions do their duty, while a techno-funk music track rocks the house!

On Strike

If you dig fighting action and strategy from a helicopter's point of view, Urban Strike is excellent. The Strike team strikes again!

  • When you're oh foot in Mission 2, ten MR9 shots and one missile destroy one Jet
  • Sneak'up on guards slowly, and they won't shoot.
  • Each civilian you save and unload at base repairs your Armor by 100.
