Plot[edit]

Early in 1979, Japan's most famed rocketship, the JX-1 Hawk, with its crew of 30, was launched from the Interstellar Exploration Agency’s rocket launch site at Mt. Fuji into space on a nine-month journey to investigate the planet Saturn.

After the journey, the crew are given a new directive for the mission from Earth. It was discovered that a small, runaway 'planet' (which some scientists believed to be the solid mega-dense core of a collapsed star) had somehow run amok. It is given the name 'Gorath' by the international scientific community. Upon encountering Gorath and attempting to investigate its rapid movement in the solar system, they discover that Gorath is smaller than Earth but with 6000 times Earth's gravity. The JX-1 is caught in its gravity well and its crew loses their lives as the enormous gravity well of the approaching celestial body destroys the ship.

Back on Earth during the Christmas season, the transmitted data made its way back to Earth. A month later in 1980, astronomers and astrophysicists throughout the international community announce that the enormous celestial body would collide with the Earth in two years time.

At the United Nations, a gathering of Earth’s top scientists resolved this situation by pooling large amounts of technical advancements they made in the past two decades. After much debriefing, the scientific community unveiled their plan to save the Earth. They dub it the South Pole Operation. The South Pole Operation base is to be designed to house a large international team of engineers and scientists. The plan involves the construction of huge rocket thruster engines, 500 meters below the surface and in an area 600 kilometers in diameter, producing an atomic force equal to that of 6,600,000,000 megatons. When completed and activated, these mega-thrusters would move the Earth more than 400,000 kilometers out of its orbit in 100 days until it was safely out of range of the approaching Gorath and its devastating gravity, and then move the Earth back into its proper orbit once the danger had passed.

The U.N. then sends the remaining prototype sub-light spacecraft JX-2 Eagle into space to obtain further data on Gorath.

Construction on the massive South Pole base is put into action as ships and helicopters from many nations bring in building material. In addition, powerful mobile heat-generating devices known as atomic burrowers were quickly cobbled together to assist in creating the caverns in the icy terrain of the Antarctic that would be needed to house the booster rockets.

A flashback to their school days indicates Nimmi getting pregnant because of an associate and she winds up approaching her dear companion Bharose for help.

Meanwhile, in deep space, the JX-2 Eagle succeeds in its mission. The data they acquired, including the disturbing fact that Gorath was continuously adding to its mass by absorbing more space debris in the path of its gravity well. This information was sent to the U.N. personnel on the space stations SSS-1, Terra, and Delta.

Back on Earth, the first preliminary test of the rocket thrusters is about to commence. Around the world, citizens watch live television broadcasts of the event. The thrusters are activated and the results are witnessed from orbiting space stations the Earth is gently moving. The South Pole Operation is hailed as a success and the Earth was moving out of the way of Gorath's path.

Meanwhile, in space, with this news, the JX-2 Eagle is ordered to return to its base on Earth, along with the three space stations (all of which were moved to avoid having the multibillion-dollar constructs being struck by Gorath when it approached the Earth).

Back on Earth, an unexpected threat was literally unearthed when the completed rocket boosters were tested. The backlash of incredible heat this created caused a gigantic, 30-meter-long walrus to emerge from its home deep below the frozen tundra. (This creature was named 'Maguma' in Japanese press info about this incident; Maguma was evidently a hidden remnant of prehistoric creatures that survived into modern times.)

Angered by the dramatic intrusion into his home, Maguma began attacking the U.N. base. Acting to save the installation, a small VTOL craft that was used as fast cargo transport, but equipped with a powerful laser, was sent to stop the assault. The pilot was determined to halt the creature without killing him and initially used the laser cannon to cause an avalanche that buried the beast. Maguma easily escaped, however, and continued his attack. This left the South Pole crew no choice but to turn the craft's deadly laser beam on the creature, and the enormous animal was killed. Back in deep space, Gorath was continuing its destructive path, now absorbing the rings of Saturn. The JX-2 and the space finally arrive back on Earth.

Sometime later, Gorath is close enough to the Earth to be seen by the naked eye and the atmosphere is reacting as clouds are drawn toward the star. Tides begin to rise and a state of emergency is declared. The Moon, Earth's lone satellite, is pulled in by Gorath's gravity and is obliterated. Gorath's full effect upon the Earth is felt as Tokyo is flooded by a tsunami. At the Interstellar Exploration Agency launch site at Mt. Fuji, the JX-2 and the space station Terra are destroyed by an earthquake. The situation also became critical at the South Pole Operation base, as flooding waters enter the thruster area, extinguishing several fires.

After the critical moment passed, the full cooperation of every nation on the planet succeeded marvelously and Earth was moved out of Gorath's path, and then successfully actuated back into its normal orbit, thus saving the planet from destruction.

Plot[edit]

Following the events of Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters, the Aratrum is unable to contact Haruo and the rest after their encounter with the original Godzilla. The Captain orders the Aratum's withdrawal if drones fail to find survivors within 48 hours. Haruo Sakaki is revealed rescued by a native girl named Miana, who treated his wound with a strange powder. Haruo reunites with some of teammates while they confronted who they later learned to be Miana's twin sister Maina before being captured by the latter's hunting party. The group are reunited with Martin Lazzari whose platoon have been healed by twins' people who are known as the 'Houtua', surviving descendants of humans who remained on Earth and safeguard the egg of their fallen deity.

The group are telepathically questioned by the twins and the Houtua leaders over why they burned their lands, letting them go once Haruo explains they were only attacking Godzilla. Accompanied by Miana and Maina as their protective guides and observers, the twins revealing they can also speak verbally, Haruo's group reunites with Metphies and the other survivors during an encounter with the Servum. During the fight, Galu-Gu realizes that the twins' arrowheads are laced with 'nanometal', the nanotechnology used to create Mechagodzilla. Galu-Gu explains that the nanometal somehow survived and expanded itself over the past 20 millennia. Haruo is convinced by Galu-Gu to remain on Earth and resume the plan to kill Godzilla, sending a few crew members back to the Aratrum. The group trace the energy signature to the rebuilt facility that held Mechagodzilla, which Galu-Gu christens 'Mechagodzilla City'. The twins part ways with the group while warning Haruo that the nanometal is poisonous; the Bilusaludo assuring the group that the technology is only harmful to Godzilla.

The team soon finds that surviving half of Mechagodzilla's head is the source of the nanometal as Galu-Gu accesses Mechagodzilla's brain to construct all necessary materials to trap Godzilla within the city and cover it with nanometal to finish it off with EMP harpoons. While overseeing the construction, her mech suit modified into one of three Vulture exo-armors, Yuko confesses her feelings for Haruo and kisses him. Feeling slightly ill since entering the city like some of the others, Haruo finds Metphies working in a cave to repair an item with some of Galu-Gu's technology. Metphies cryptically hints the Bilusaludos' motives of becoming monsters themselves due to their obsession with logic, confiding to Haruo the name of a greater terror than Godzilla that destroyed his homeworld: 'Ghidorah'.

As Godzilla awakens, most of the human members are horrified to learn that most of the Bilusaludo had willingly allowed themselves to be assimilated into Mechagodzilla City to further fortify it. Godzilla's quick advance on the city forces Galu-Gu to sacrifice the city's defenses in order to divert power to finish the harpoon while Haruo, Yuko and Belu-be use the Vultures to slow Godzilla down. Though the trio managed to hold Godzilla for the plan to go underway, Godzilla survives the trap and proceeds to overheat the facility. This forces a defiant Galu-Gu to fuse with the nanometal as the humans escape the city. Galu-Gu then has the Vultures absorb their pilots to use as sacrificial spears to kill Godzilla.

Haruo is unaffected while Yuko is being slowly converted against her will. Metphies warns a conflicted Haruo that Mechagodzilla City will consume Earth if not stopped and that its destruction could save Yuko, Galu-Gu arguing that transcending their humanity is the only way to kill Godzilla. Haruo ultimately decides to fight Godzilla with his humanity intact, the destruction of Galu-Gu and the command center rendering the nanometal inert as Godzila frees itself and destroys the city. Haruo tends to Yuko, who is unable to wake from her comatose state, while the surviving humans hide in a cave with Metphies as everything burns around them.

Production[edit]

The second installment in the anime trilogy was announced in a second post-credits scene in the theatrical release of the film revealing the film's Japanese title, poster featuring Mechagodzilla and the film's 2018 release date. The film's Japanese title was revealed as Gojira: Kessen Kidō Zōshoku Toshi (translations varied from Godzilla: Battle Mobile Breeding City to Godzilla: The City Mechanized for the Final Battle),[6][7] while the English title was later revealed as Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle.[8] In March 2018, the film's official website revealed a new poster, plot details, and that singer XAI would return to perform the film's theme song The Sky Falls.[9] The English dub was produced by Post Haste Digital.[4]

Music[edit]

Takayuki Hattori returned to compose the soundtrack, marking it his fourth Godzilla film score. XAI also returned to perform the film's theme song The Sky Falls. On his work on the film, Hattori stated:

Gorath 1962 Full Movie

'18 years after Godzilla 2000, I am glad to be back in the world of the new Godzilla which was opened by Shin Godzilla. This is the first animated film in the history of Godzilla, and I am excited to be able to take on the challenge while at the same time I feel it is a very big mission. I think this will be a Godzilla movie that you can’t possibly imagine. I expressed in music my own feelings about the characters and the overwhelming presence of Godzilla created by the two directors, Mr. Shizuno and Mr. Seshita.' - Takayuki Hattori, Toho Press Notes[2]

Release[edit]

Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle was given a theatrical release in Japan on May 18, 2018,[6] and released worldwide on Netflix on July 18, 2018.[10]

Box office[edit]

Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle was released in 158 theaters in Japan and reached eighth place at the box office.[11] The film earned ¥100 million on its first week.[12]

Critical reception[edit]

Naoya Fujita from IGN gave the film a 4.5 rating, indicating a 'bad' rating, stating, 'Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle takes some promising ingredients, but cooks them into an unpalatable meal. We never really understand what the protagonists are fighting for, and there's not even a satisfying scene of urban destruction (a Godzilla staple). It fails both emotionally and viscerally.'[13] James Grebey from Inverse called the film 'bleakly pointless', stating the film is 'extremely self-serious, depressing and fairly light on fun' and called the film 'the biggest bummer in Godzilla’s filmography.'[14] James Perkins from HeyUGuys gave the film 3 stars out of 5, stating the film is 'neither the best or worst iteration of the Godzilla franchise but is most definitely made with the intention of trying something new but adding a heavy sci-fi and futuristic element to the famous monster.'[15]

Jeff Pawlak from Geekiverse awarded the film 5.5 out of 10, feeling that the film had 'great ideas' with an 'interesting setting' but felt the CG animation was 'ugly as ever', felt the film lacked complex characters and action, stating 'City on the Edge of Battle completely mishandles the pass from Planet of the Monsters, failing to adequately explore the worthwhile worldbuilding it introduces, or that its predecessor introduced.'[16] Callum May from Anime News Network gave the film an overall A- rating, praising Haruo for growing as a character but criticized the lack of development for the other characters. May also criticized the second act for dragging by having the characters simply wander in the city. May concluded by stating, 'While it doesn't fix many of the issues from the first film, Haruo's development manages to sell a more character-driven narrative and makes his relationships more empathetic. It's perhaps not the film that fans were expecting, but it's the film this trilogy needed to lead into an epic conclusion in Godzilla: The Planet Eater.'[17]

Mitch Nissen from ComiConverse gave the film 3 stars out of 5, criticizing the slow pace but praising the film for improving on Part 1 by expanding its ideas. Nissen also noted how the anime films do not feel like anime or kaiju films but rather, legitimate sci-fi reinventions, stating, 'they are pure science fiction. Fans of in-depth cerebral science fiction should find much to enjoy about the films. References to Godzilla lore abound, much visible only to the hyper analytical Godzilla fan.'[18] Taylor Bauldwin from Geeks of Color called the film 'disappointing'. He criticized the slow pace, the lack of compelling motivations for the characters, and the climax battle for not carrying any weight. He concluded by stating, 'I did enjoy the style and sounds of the movie but that alone is not nearly enough for redemption here. This movie begins, things happen, and then the movie ends exactly the same way it started.'[19]
