One of the first films to employ cinema verite techniques (on 16mm film stock), CHRONICLE OF A SUMMER (from 1961), stands the test of time as a bold, moving, and thought-provoking experiment.
In Paris, 1960, directors Jean Rouch, an anthropologist, and Edgar Morin, a sociologist, begin CHRONICLE OF A SUMMER discussing the concept of their experiment with one of their participants, a woman named Marceline. In order to capture Parisians in a truthful, natural way, they ask her to perform
candid interviews on the street, asking passersby about whether or not they are happy. Later, the directors follow Angelo, a Renault car factory worker, throughout his day; they record his conversation with Landry, a Black French citizen, who discusses race and the working class. The directors
also drop in on several dinner conversations around the city, including one between Marceline and her boyfriend. Around their own dinner table, the directors discuss expanding upon their film ideas during an argument with others about France's war in Algeria.
Opening up their film to a more personal viewpoint, the directors group together several of their participants for a cafe luncheon, where Landry and a friend discuss racism and the Algerian war and Marceline discusses her years in a concentration camp during WWII. Later, on her own, Marceline
walks through the Place de la Concorde and a Paris train station, remembering her return to her family after the war. The directors also interview an Italian-born expatriate, Marilous, who talks about her troubled life and desire to kill herself.
In a new, less intense sequence, the directors and several of the participants travel to St. Tropez, where they watch a bullfight, visit the seashore, and go rock-climbing. A young model, Sophie, talks about life at the famous vacation spot, and Landry compares his life with two young schoolgirls.
Finally, the directors invite all the participants to watch the rushes of their filmed experiment. They get a mixed reaction and several disagreements from their small audience, but they conclude that they have gone beyond everyday truth and seem pleased with the results.
In whatever technical or conceptual way other cinema verite and direct cinema documentaries have moved beyond CHRONICLE OF A SUMMER, there is no doubt that this early representative of the genre constitutes one of the most successful. Despite the admitted lack of planning at the outset of the
filming (or, perhaps, because of it), CHRONICLE OF A SUMMER paints a richly revealing portrait. Whether it's 'truthful' or not remains debatable, but even that fact is openly questioned within the film, during the post-screening sequence (some of the participants think the results were artificial,
others consider it indecent).
Indeed, CHRONICLE OF A SUMMER opens itself to the criticism that it invades and exploits personal tragedy, but the filmmaker's awareness of this troubling fact (inscribed into the text), make this a more responsible 'experiment' than many of the films that it influenced over the years. The
technical necessity of 'cheating' (via jump cuts and reordered editing) to create 'truth' is not always as openly acknowledged, but then all documentaries 'cheat' in one way or another; in retrospect, CHRONICLE OF A SUMMER also fits in squarely with the nouvelle vague's breakthrough fiction films
that crossed generic lines by using documentary techniques (cinematographer Raoul Coutard had just filmed BREATHLESS, 1959, and would soon film JULES AND JIM, 1961). In the end, CHRONICLE challenges its own attempt to create a purely nonfictional cinema, but in doing so, establishes a deeply
reflexive and historically significant event.
